Greetings from the Department of Art 3D Lab! We would like to invite any teachers and students, who are interested, to come visit our lab to learn more about the laser cutter/engraver and the CNC router.
The laser cutter can be used in a wide variety of applications for almost every discipline of the fine arts and we encourage anyone to take a look at our blog (http://blog.lib.umn.edu/artdept/lasercutter/) to get a feel for some of its applications. The CNC router is an equally powerful tool, information related to this machine can be found on the CNC router blog (http://blog.lib.umn.edu/art-cnc/myblog/).
Teachers, inform your students about our lab or even better schedule an appointment for a quick informational class demonstration. Due to the fact that at first blush these technologies appear to be intimidating, we find that once students get to see how they operate first hand, they gain a much better comprehension as to how these tools can be added to their creative repertoire.
Additionally, since not all classes directly incorporate use of the 3D Lab in their curriculum, we have found that some students are unaware of these great tools available to them. We are contacting teachers and students at this time in the semester so that these tools can be incorporated into projects throughout the rest of the semester.
The 3D Lab is located in room E153. Regular hours are posted on the Tool Crib door but special off hours demonstrations can be arranged for any interested teachers.
