The 46th Annual University of Minnesota Iron Pour to mark 'New Shoes' in the foundry
Founded in 1970 by Wayne Potratz, the University of Minnesota Annual Iron Pour is the longest-running academic sculptural pour in the country. Students and visiting artists will work together to perform an aesthetic, athletic, pyrotechnic event, pouring molten iron into sand molds to make cast iron sculptures. The 46th Annual Iron Pour will mark Potratz's retirement in 2014, as Tamsie Ringler, Term Assistant Professor in sculpture, will ceremonially and symbolically fill Potratz's shoes with iron. The pour will be directed by Ringler along with teaching assistant and MFA candidate Chris Groth.
The pour is being held on Friday, April 24 from 11am-4pm (ceremonial pouring of the shoes will be at 3), at the Regis Center for Art Foundry. Visiting artists include Wayne Potratz, Professor Emeritus, Robert Tom, Professor of Sculpture and students from Augsburg College, and Stanton Sears, Professor of Sculpture and students from Macalester College. Appearances will also be made by the Prairie Fire Lady Choir and members of the U of M Cheerleading Team. Event information here.
