Teckemeyer's Artwork Chosen for 2013 Art on the River Public Art Exhibition

The City of Dubuque, Iowa, announces the selection of 10 works of outdoor sculpture for the 2013 Art on the River Exhibition. In its eighth year, the temporary public art exhibit drew 79 entries from 47 artists from 18 states and one foreign country (Vienna, Austria).
The works will be installed in front of the Grand River Center and along the Mississippi Riverwalk at the Port of Dubuque in July 2013, with an opening event set for Thursday, July 11, at 5:00 p.m. at the Grand River Center. The event is free and open to the public.

The following sculptures were chosen for this highly competitive exhibit through a blind judging process:

  • "Conscious of Her Shores," by Jason Lowrey of Williamsburg, Virginia, is a marble, limestone and iron sculpture showing how people interact with one another.

  • "Moving Compass," by Kristin Thielking and Keven Brunett of Stevens Point, Wis., uses iron wheels and glass to show a disrupted journey and finding one's way when life is out of balance.

  • "Interstellar Naught," by Jeff Boshart of Charleston, Ill., is a steel modular structure that will be built on site.

  • "Quarks VI and Quarks VII," by Guy Bellaver of St. Charles, Ill., are colorful sculptures inspired by the proton-antiproton collider at Fermilab in Batavia, Illinois.

  • "River Boat Bench," by Don Lawler of Stephensport, Ky., recalls a barge slowing turning in the current of the Mississippi River.

  • "Cone Flower Cluster," by Bounnak Thammavong of Swisher, Iowa, is an abstract representation of cone flowers with solar powered lighting.

  • "Steel Inverted Arch," by Kenneth Thompson of Blissfield, Mich., is sculpted from steel and limestone to illustrate form and how negative space defines it.

  • "Prairie Walker," by James Johnson of Charleston, Ill., evokes the artist's experiences with wide expanses of desert and prairie.

  • "The Human Shadow," by Jessica Teckemeyer of Dubuque, Iowa, is a bronze cast sculpture representing a newborn white tail deer in the shadow of a wolf.

Art on the River is part of the Dubuque City Council's Arts and Culture initiative. Working in conjunction with the arts and cultural affairs advisory commission, the Dubuque Museum of Art and a volunteer committee made up of artists, educators and city staff, the City has identified highly visible locations at the Port of Dubuque to display selected artwork. The Port of Dubuque is a 90-acre riverfront campus which features the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium, Grand River Center conference center, Grand Harbor Resort and WaterPark, Diamond Jo Casino, Port of Dubuque Marina, historic Dubuque Star Brewery, and Dubuque Shot Tower.

A panel of three credentialed jurors reviews the artist applications and makes a recommendation to the commission and the city council on the selection of artwork. Jurors for the 2013-2014 exhibit were:

  • Seth Myers, conceptual artist and assistant professor of art and communication at Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa.

  • Sean O'Harrow, executive director of the University of Iowa Art Museum, Iowa City, Iowa.

  • Laura Primozic, artist and instructional technician at Illinois State University in Normal, Ill.

The 2012-2013 Art on the River Exhibit, consisting of 10 works of sculpture, will be on exhibit through June 30, 2013. All of the sculptures are for sale and can be installed in both indoor and outdoor areas. The exhibit is free, can be viewed sunrise to sunset year-round, and is accessible.
